We live in a world that constantly pressures us to fragment who we are.
We are encouraged to construct a “professional persona” for the workplace, maintain a “social face” for our network, and reserve our true spiritual baseline for Sunday morning or private prayer. We tell ourselves this separation is practical wisdom—a necessary strategy to navigate a fast-moving world without causing friction.
But Scripture calls this division by its real name: double-mindedness.
”A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.” — James 1:8
When your internal spiritual foundation doesn’t match your external daily movement, life feels heavy. You aren’t just facing the day; you are burning half your mental and spiritual energy managing the divider between who you are in Christ and how you act in the world.
True alignment isn’t about legalism or rigid rules. It is about coherence—living a life where your spirit, mind, words, and actions all speak the exact same language.
What “Tewahedo” Teaches Us About Unity
To understand what total spiritual coherence looks like in practice, we look to the Horn of Africa and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church—one of the oldest continuous Christian traditions in human history.
The Ge’ez word Tewahedo (pronounced twa-ha-do) literally translates to “made one” or “unified.”
Theologically, it describes the complete, indivisible unity of Christ’s divine and human natures woven into a single, seamless reality. It isn’t a partial mixture where one side erases the other; it is total, uncompromised oneness.
When applied to our personal walk with God, Tewahedo becomes a master plan for living. Christ did not die so we could live fractured, compartmentalized lives. He came to make us whole.
”I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.” — John 17:23
Alignment means bringing your everyday human reality—your job, your speech, your finances, your creative work, and your relationships—into total submission and oneness with the Spirit of God inside you.
Unbroken History: The Proof of the Garima Gospels
Alignment is not an abstract theory. It requires real stewardship, courage, and a refusal to compromise your foundation when the culture around you shifts.
Look at history: While historical councils across Western Europe edited, translated, and standardized their canons over time—often dropping books that were complex or politically inconvenient—Ethiopia preserved an expansive, unbroken canon of 81 books.
This wasn’t just an abstract decision; it was physically preserved through fire, war, and isolation.
High in the northern mountains of Ethiopia, at the Abba Garima Monastery, sit the Garima Gospels. Written in ancient Ge’ez on goat skin vellum and vibrant with intricate illuminations, these texts have been carbon-dated to between 390 and 660 AD. They are the oldest surviving complete illustrated Christian manuscript on Earth.
While other ancient texts were lost, destroyed, or rewritten through political turnover, Ethiopian monks safeguarded these sacred pages in remote stone sanctuaries for over 1,500 years. They maintained historical and spiritual alignment with the original source, refusing to trim away truth just to fit a simplified narrative.
Lessons from 1 Enoch: Order vs. Chaos
Among the foundational texts preserved in the full 81-book Ethiopian canon—and quoted directly in the New Testament in Jude 1:14–15—is the Book of Enoch (1 Enoch). Enoch provides a vivid picture of what cosmic alignment actually looks like.
In 1 Enoch 2:1, Enoch describes creation operating in complete, unbroken alignment with God’s design:
”Observe ye everything that takes place in the heaven, how they do not change their orbits, and the luminaries which are in the heaven, how they all rise and set in order each in its season, and transgress not against their appointed order.” — 1 Enoch 2:1
In Enoch’s revelation, the stars, the sun, and the heavenly bodies do not fight their identity. They do not try to jump into an orbit intended for another creation. They stay in their appointed order.
In Enoch’s account, spiritual chaos enters the world only when created beings abandon their proper estate and break alignment with divine law.
When you step out of the lane God called you to—whether out of fear, envy, or trying to please people—you introduce friction and chaos into your life. True peace arrives when you stop chasing someone else’s orbit and stand firm in your own.
Lessons from Jubilees: Operating in God’s Timing
Another critical text in the Ethiopian canon is the Book of Jubilees (sometimes called the “Lesser Genesis”). Jubilees lays out a meticulous account of how God organized history, creation, and sacred time into precise weeks, years, and 49-year Jubilee cycles.
The central takeaway of Jubilees is simple: God is a God of divine timing.
”And the angel of the presence spoke to Moses according to the word of the Lord, saying: Write the complete history of the creation… until the sanctuary of the Lord shall be made in Jerusalem.” — Jubilees 1:26
Misalignment often happens when we try to force outcomes outside of God’s timing. We get anxious, rush ahead of our season, or force doors open before our character has been tested to handle what’s behind them.
Alignment requires trusting not just God’s order (Enoch), but also God’s clock (Jubilees).
The Cost to Connection: Why Masks Don’t Work
When we live out of alignment, the first thing that breaks isn’t just our internal peace—it’s our human connection.
If you are constantly editing your personal canon, hiding your true convictions, or wearing a polished persona to keep the peace, the people around you aren’t actually connecting with you. They are connecting with the performance.
Real, deep, unconditional human connection requires two authentic selves to meet. You cannot build genuine intimacy on a foundation of hidden pages. When you align your inner truth with your outer voice, you finally give the world the opportunity to know—and love—the whole person God made you to be.
A Moment of Inner Reflection: Listening to the Friction
Think back to the last time you said “yes” to an expectation when every fiber of your spirit screamed “no.”
Think of the physical toll of that decision: the subtle tightening in your chest, the knot in your stomach, or that lingering, quiet exhaustion at the end of the day.
We often write those feelings off as everyday stress or the cost of doing business. But they aren’t just stress. They are your soul’s warning lights. They are the physical tax of stepping out of your God-given orbit.
Ask yourself honestly:
- Where in my life am I spending energy maintaining a mask?
- What chapter of my truth or my story have I been editing out to make myself easier for others to digest?
- What would my daily life look like if my private devotion, my public work, and my core values spoke the exact same language?
Alignment isn’t about achieving flawless, legalistic perfection by tomorrow morning. It is about integrity. It is about taking a quiet breath, looking at the mirror, and choosing to stop fighting yourself.
When you honor your full, unedited canon, trust God’s timing, and walk steadily in the orbit appointed for you, the friction melts away. You step out of the shadows of performance and into the quiet, unshakeable strength of being made whole.
